Agricultural techniques: potentials and costs of greenhouse gas mitigation

How can greenhouse gases be avoided in agriculture? This question was asked by the LandPaKT project. Within the framework of a graduate school, LandPaKT systematically analysed common agricultural practices. The aim was to tap potentials for greenhouse gas reduction efficiently at farm level.

For this reason, particular attention was paid to those agricultural areas that promised great reduction potentials. For example:

  • re-wetting of organic soils,
  • carbon sequestration in mineral soils depending on agricultural activities and
  • livestock husbandry

With modelling and simulation approaches, single as well as combined measures were analyzed with regard to their overall effect. Recommendations for the most-promising measures on the farm level could be deduced.

For LandPaKT, the Leibniz Institute for Agricultural Engineering and Bioeconomy and Albrecht Daniel Thaer-Institute for Agricultural and Horticultural Sciences of the Humboldt Universität zu Berlin (divisions Soil Science and Site Science, Agronomy and Crop Production, Agricultural Policy and Strategies for Using Bioresources) combined their competences.

Graduate School

Within the framework of the graduate school, LandPaKT offered a structured, interdisciplinary environment for the PhD students. The PhD candidates could profit from regularly and qualified support, had access to several training opportunities to improve those skills which are indispensable for a successful scientific career. Here you can find doctoral theses.
